My partner and I were recently hosted in one of the well-appointed river suites at the Pestana Kruger Lodge, overlooking the Crocodile River. Arriving at night, the river and hills were beautifully lit up by the full moon, and the familiar grunts of the hippos and night birds welcomed us to this wonderful part of the country. The Buhlebethu restaurant located in the main lodge is where we headed for our dinner and we were certainly not disappointed with the superb meal which had been prepared for us.
Our weekend in the bush had gotten off to a good start and on Saturday we spent a lazy morning at one of the lodge's two lovely outdoor swimming pools (ours had the pool bar - the second one is ideal for children, because it boasts a super tube).
For those who wish to indulge themselves, the Camelot Health Spa is situated next door to the pool bar and as an extra also offers to set up their four-posted tent for outdoor treatments.
We entered the Kruger National Park at the Malelane Gate in the late afternoon for our game drive and were not disappointed with our sightings - in particular the different species of birds we saw, ranging from colourful Lilacbreasted Rollers and Whitefronted Bee-eaters to Tawny eagles and African White-backed vultures who were feasting on the remains of a carcass. We stopped for tea at Berg-en-Dal, one of the national park camps that is extremely well wooded. This camp also has an excellent shaded walkway next to a small dam where one can park off for an afternoon and while away the day watching the crocodiles, turtles and birds go about their daily activity.
Saturday night saw us heading for the popular Crocafellas, on the Pestana Kruger Lodge property. This restaurant is located on a small lake that has a number of resident crocodiles. It would certainly appear that the Malelane locals enjoy the restaurant's contemporary cuisine because it was packed to capacity and one would be well advised to book ahead to secure a table.
The lodge offers to organise day and evening safaris as well as quad and mountain biking and bush walks. Arrangements can also be made to play golf at the Malelane Country Club (situated right next door to the lodge) or river rafting and boat rides in the Blyde River Canyon, as well as a visit to the Cheetah and White Lion breeding projects.
The lodge has 74 rooms, standard, deluxe, family and suites - all equipped with all the mod cons and is not only ideal for a family outing, but also for conferences, weddings or any other special occasion.
A very nice affordable destination!
