The rugged beauty of the South Peninsula with it's many wonderful beaches, surfing spots and fishing culture are a few of the many temptations that lure travellers to what the great explorer, Sir Francis Drake, called 'the fairest Cape that we saw in the circumference of the Globe'.
If you are staying in Cape Town city over December or January, do try to spend at least one or two days exploring the hidden treasures of the South. Your body and soul will be rewarded and rejuvenated as you escape the masses and hectic buzz of Cape Town.
There is more than enough to keep the visitor to the Southern Peninsula occupied for days or weeks. This is the place to take off your shoes and walk along expansive Longbeach at Noordhoek, or buy a rock lobster fishing permit to go diving for your own crayfish at Kommetjie, or take surfing lessons with Gary and get to ride some of the best waves in the world.
Alternatively, horse ride on a beach or mountain bike between Blackhill and Redhill; or abseil and climb the spectacular rock faces above False Bay. There is also great caving above Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek and magnificent hikes across the entire mountain chain from Table Mountain to Cape Point.
You can cruise False Bay looking for Great White sharks, or bring your angling gear and go fishing for Cob or Yellowtail, or deep sea for Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna to make your own sashimi; or scuba dive with the professionals in Simonstown to discover an underwater wonderland.
Or just take it easy! Try testing your birding skills by finding the red-listed African Black Oyster Catcher among the rock pools at Cape Point, or discover the local fynbos flora - the world's smallest and richest floral kingdom, or explore the rock pools and collect your own mussels for dinner (remember to buy a Bait permit first!).
You may also want to release the inner wild hog by renting a Harley Davidson or vintage motorcycle and sidecar to explore the winding, scenic roads of the South as you cruise down to Cape Point in the best way possible!
Of course, you will also want to spend time just soaking up the sun, lazing away the days, eating out at excellent restaurants, taking the kids to local farm villages or discovering the penguins at Boulders Beach in Simonstown. Then end each halcyon day sipping sundowners on a beach as the sun sinks slowly below the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, while the crayfish and mussels you caught simmer in the pot!
A few of the "must do" highlights of the South Peninsula are:
The 45 minute scenic walk from Cape Point to Cape of Good Hope above the spectacular Diaz beach.
The African Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach, Simonstown.
Driving Chapman's Peak (assuming the contractors have managed to finish repair work on the road)
Strolling along Longbeach from Kommetjie to Noordhoek.
Kalk Bay harbour when the fishing vessels arrive in port between 10h00 and 13h00. You can buy directly from quayside vendors. Summer species may include Tuna, Snoek (barracuda), Yellowtail, Cob (kabeljou), Cape Salmon (geelbek) and Red Roman.
